Construction Plans Detailed in New Sign Adjacent to Pier
State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced the New York State Canal Corporation has laid out its plans for the reconstruction of Brewerton Pier; a plan that once completed, will help to increase tourism, grow jobs and create new recreational opportunities in the central New York area.
Reconstruction of the pier—which was deemed unsafe for use by the state and closed following its collapse into the Oneida River in 2009—has been in the planning stage for several years. Now, as a result of the advocacy of Senator Ritchie and other local leaders, plans are being put into motion for its rebuilding. This week, at the request of Senator Ritchie, a sign detailing the reconstruction timeline was installed in the Town of Hastings.
“In the years since the Brewerton Pier has been closed, the central New York region has missed out on recreational opportunities and the tourism dollars that come along with them,” said Senator Ritchie.
“Once the pier is made usable again, central New York will see the benefits of improved recreational opportunities, increased tourism and new jobs. I would like to thank the Canal Corporation for turning its focus to the rebuilding of the pier, as well as the local leaders and community members who advocated for its reconstruction.”
Local leaders are praising the establishing of a timeline for repairs and are looking forward to the positive effects rehabilitation of the pier will have on the region.
“The reconstruction of the Brewerton Pier will have a significant impact on Central New York; enhancing the quality of life for members of our community and boosting the local economy through tourism and the creation of jobs,” said Town of Hastings Supervisor Tony Bush. “This project has been a top priority for the Town of Hastings. We thank Senator Ritchie and the Canal Corporation for recognizing that and look forward to its completion.”
“During my time as Chair of the Oswego County Legislature, it was a top priority to encourage the state to move forward with repairs to the Brewerton Pier,” said Oswego County Treasurer and former Oswego County Legislature Chairman, as well as former Town of Hastings Supervisor Fred Beardsley. “Now that the plan is finally coming to fruition, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the positive effect it will have our region once it’s completed.”
“Ever since the Brewerton Pier closed, we’ve been working tirelessly as a community to encourage the state to restore it,” said Oswego County 9th District Legislator James Weatherup. “I would like to thank Senator Ritchie for helping to move this project forward as well as the Canal Corporation for installing this sign which will help to keep the public in the loop about this very important project.”
According to Canal Corporation officials, work on the pier will begin in March of 2015. Construction is scheduled to be completed by that following November.
