Amedore Moves Greene County Land Conveyance Bill

The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.5120), sponsored by Senator George Amedore, that authorizes the New York State Office of General Services to transfer a parcel of approximately 50 acres to Greene County for the purposes of a new county correctional facility.

The parcel is currently part of the existing Corrections and Community Supervision Campus in Coxsackie. The Department of Correctional Services had previously agreed to the transfer, but the action needed approval by the State Legislature.

 
“The current facility is out-of-date and does not meet the needs of the community any longer,” said Senator Amedore. “It’s the oldest jail in New York State, it’s costly to operate, and doesn’t have enough room, which leads to increased costs for the taxpayers when inmates have to be housed elsewhere. This is a common sense solution to help protect taxpayer dollars, and build a much-needed facility for Greene County."

“This is a great win for Greene County,” said Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley. “This land is the perfect location for a new jail. My responsibility as Sheriff is not only to look after the well-being of the public, but also to protect our tax dollars. This will allow us to move forward with the project and help alleviate a financial burden on the residents, and I can’t thank our state representatives enough for working with us.”

 

The bill was sent to the Assembly for consideration, where it is sponsored by Assemblyman Peter Lopez.
