Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) and Assembly Member Michael Kearns (D, West Seneca) have introduced legislation (S-6058) to designate a portion of the state highway system in West Seneca as “Veterans Memorial Highway.” The designation would apply to a portion of state route 277, Union Road, located in the Town of West Seneca.
“This designation is one way we can show our appreciation to the men and women who have served our country with pride and distinction,” Gallivan said. “The highway will serve as a lasting reminder of the service and sacrifice made by all military personnel, past and present, who call West Seneca home.”
The legislation has been introduced in the State Senate and the State Assembly and will be considered in January.
“For those who have always answered the call under the most trying situations, we need to pay tribute to our veterans and say thank you for their sacrifice and service, by dedicating this road in their honor,” Kearns said.
The legislation comes at the request of Supervisor Sheila Meegan and the West Seneca Town Board.
“Our veterans’ devotion to this country and the sacrifices they’ve made for so many around the world must be recognized, and West Seneca will continue to honor the men and women who’ve served by dedicating this portion of Union Rd. to Veterans Memorial Highway,” Meegan said. In no way does this equate to everything they’ve done for us but we just want to show our appreciation and say thank you.”
The legislation requires the Commissioner of Transportation to install and maintain ceremonial signage along the highway to acknowledge the designation.
