Senator Sue Serino Casts Vote to Strengthen Lyme Disease Legislation

Albany, NY—Senator Sue Serino (R, C, I—Hyde Park) took affirmative action today in the fight against a disease that has effected countless residents of Dutchess and Putnam Counties—Lyme.

“I made a promise to my constituents that I would be relentless in the fight to eradicate Lyme Disease and today we took yet another step in that direction by strengthening critical legislation,” said Senator Serino.

“Once again, I applaud the Senate Majority Coalition and the bill’s sponsor, Senator Kemp Hannon, for their continued commitment to eradicating the disease that has affected so many in my district and for doing it the right way.”

The bill (S. 1693), supported by Serino, is an amendment to Chapter 532 of the laws of 2014, which sought to give doctors much needed flexibility in determining effective and appropriate treatment of Lyme and chronic conditions without subjecting them to immediate investigation by New York’s Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC). The amendment will strike a balance between granting doctors that critical flexibility and maintaining OPMC’s ability to be strong and protective of our health care system.

“This legislation will go a long way in combating the unique symptoms of Lyme and other chronic conditions while maintaining the integrity of our quality health care system,” continued Serino.

“There is more work to be done and ending the scourge of this terrible disease will remain a top priority for me throughout this Legislative Session,” Serino concluded.
