Discovery Guides are volunteers who are important to the day-to-day operation of the zoos and aquarium. They work within the zoo and aquarium’s education department to interpret exhibits, interact with visitors, and assist with public events and activities.
Discovery Guides are specially trained in public speaking and teaching methods to discuss the biology and other information pertaining to the wildlife on exhibit. While serving their community, teens in the program gain experience in job application and interviewing, public presentation skills, time management, working in teams, work ethics, and leadership skills, all of which are vital to academic and professional success. Collectively, the volunteers in the Discovery Guide Program are ethnically diverse, speak a variety of languages, and come from every Council, Assembly and Senate District, most of whom are from Brooklyn.
Students can also receive community service credit for their work.
Applications for the Prospect Park Zoo Discovery Guide program will be accepted from candidates age 14 and up until Thursday, April 30. Applications for the New York Aquarium Discovery Guide and Docent Program will be accepted from candidates age 15 and up until Friday, May 1. Candidates must be available for all training sessions taking place in June and July.
