PORTVILLE – Members of the 2015 New York State Class D Champion Portville Central School Girls Varsity Volleyball Team were honored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- 57th District) during a special ceremony at the high school.

Senator Young presented players and coaches with New York State Resolutions commending their remarkable season that culminated in a come-from-behind 26-24 fifth-game win over Haldane Central School at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Sunday, November 22, 2015.

“This season, and the championship game, was truly exceptional, because it shares such a striking resemblance to last year’s winning season. The girls have been described as ‘fighters,’ and that’s reflected in their many hard-fought victories,” said Senator Young.

“Congratulations also go to coaches Kelly Unverdorben and Phylicia Patterson, and the parents who supported these young ladies on and off the volleyball court. The team was extremely gracious when we met, and that’s a reflection of the sense of humility instilled upon them by their school and community,” she said.

The team’s championship game performance was actually a repeat of last year’s game, where the Panthers rallied from behind to defeat Haldane Central School in the final. Senior Lydia Lukomski was named the state tournament MVP for the second year in a row. She and sophomore Haley Unverdorben were named to the all-tournament team.

The Panthers' Girls Volleyball team was led by Head Coach Kelly Unverdorben and Assistant Coach Phylicia Patterson.
