GREENE COUNTY HIGHWAY TO BE NAMED AFTER BELOVED PUBLIC SERVENT

 Senator George Amedore and Assemblyman Peter Lopez today announced that their legislation  (S.7390/A.9855) to  designate a portion of State Route 23 in the towns of Ashland and Windham in Greene County as the “Wayne C. Speenburgh Memorial Highway” has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo.  

The portion of highway to be designated begins at the intersection of Route 23 and Old Road in the town of Windham and runs west to the intersection of Route 23 and N. Settlement Road in the town of Ashland.

“Wayne Speenburgh's loss is still sorely felt by so many in the communities that he served and loved,” said Senator Amedore. “Wayne touched the lives of so many and dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for his neighbors throughout Greene County. I was proud to know him and call him a friend, and I can think of no better way to ensure his legacy is honored and remembered. I'm so glad all his great works will be memorialized on a road he used to travel so often, and he will be fondly remembered by all who drive on it."

"Wayne was a dear friend and a colleague who set an example for public service," said Assemblyman Pete Lopez. "His commitment and connection to the people of Greene County was something he proved every day. Wayne's energies and passion moved him to extraordinary efforts to support the community, and was clearly demonstrated as he helped his neighbors respond to and recover from the devastation of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. All of us are proud of Wayne and his legacy. This road dedication is a small tribute to his service and love of Greene County."

Wayne Speenburgh passed away on September 17, 2015 at 71 years of age after a long illness. An Army Veteran, he served his nation during the Vietnam War. He served as Postmaster of the Coxsackie Post Office from 1970-2000. He was elected to the County Legislature in 2004, and was elected Chairman in 2007, a position he held until his illness forced him to step down.

He also served in community in many other capacities, including as a member of the VFW and American Legion of Catskill and Coxsackie, as a coach and official for several sports leagues, and head of the Coxsackie Community Playground and the Coxsackie Food Pantry.

A dedication ceremony will be planned in the coming weeks.
