Sanders Helps Residents Dispose Of Their E-Waste With Electronics Recycling Event
October 18, 2016
State Senator James Sanders (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) assisted dozens of residents in getting rid of their old, unwanted electronics in a safe and responsible way, by hosting an E-Waste Recycling Event on Saturday in the parking lot of Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica.
“I am pleased that so many people chose to take part in this event,” Sanders said. “I am proud to be able to provide this service which is one small way we can work toward a greener, more sustainable environment.”
Electronics cannot be disposed of with regular trash or recycling as of January 1, 2015. Those doing so could be subjected to a $100 fine. If it ends up in landfills, e-waste can cause toxins to be released into the environment, which is potentially harmful to plants, animals and people. In addition to health and safety reasons, recycling electronics allows for the reuse of metals and valuable materials thereby reducing the need to produce more of these supplies.
Two truckloads of items were collected at Sanders’ E-Waste Recycling Event including working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, phones, audio/visual equipment, cell phones and PDAs.
The event was conducted in partnership with the Lower Eastside Ecology Center, an organization that works toward a more sustainable New York City by providing community-based recycling and composting programs, developing local stewardship of green space, and increasing community awareness, involvement and youth development through environmental education programs.
In addition to the Lower Eastside Ecology Center, we would also like to thank Calvary Baptist Church for allowing us to use their space to host the event and our community partners: Baisley Pond Park Block Association, Baisley Park Tenant Association and Cedar Manor Co-Op Board.
