December 2016 – Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Steve Englebright announced that their legislation to establish special “Cure Childhood Cancer” license plates is now law. The new plates will serve to increase awareness of childhood cancer, establish a new fund, and provide money for research.
Senator LaValle said, “It’s important that we build additional awareness of childhood cancer, and provide a mechanism to assist in finding a cure for this dreadful disease. As people go through their normal everyday lives, these special license plates would serve as a daily reminder that this disease affects our young and still has no cure.”
Assemblyman Steve Englebright said “Childhood cancer is the number one leading cause of death by disease for children. Given the enormity of that statistic, raising awareness is key to increased funding for research that will provide better, less toxic treatments and eventually a cure. The new ‘Cure Childhood Cancer’ license plates will serve the dual goals of raising both awareness and research funds for curing childhood cancer.”
The bill (S1485/A1683) creates the “Cure Childhood Cancer Trust Fund” within the state finance law. The new license plates will require an additional annual service charge of twenty-five dollars per each set of license plates issued, which would then be deposited into the newly created "cure childhood cancer trust fund". The fund will be used for childhood cancer research and education projects approved by the NY State Commissioner of Health, or to provide grants to New York State university childhood cancer research hospitals for the purpose of researching and promoting a cure for childhood cancer.
