Senator Gallivan Supports Legislation to Allow for Ridesharing Services in Buffalo and Upstate NY

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) joined his colleagues in the State Senate in approving legislation to make ridesharing services legal in areas outside of New York City.  The legislation would allow Transportation Network Companies, such as Uber and Lyft, to begin operating in Buffalo and other communities across the state.

“Ridesharing has proven beneficial in New York City and communities across the country and it’s time to allow these services across New York,” Gallivan said.  “Ridesharing provides jobs and gives consumers more transportation options at an affordable price.  The legislation also establishes operating requirements and protections similar to those in place in other states.”

The bill (S-4108D) addresses insurance issues which have prevented ridesharing companies from operating outside New York City.  It establishes clear guidelines relative to insurance coverage and safety standards.    

Ridesharing programs provide economic opportunities and transportation services to underserved areas.  They also have helped to reduce drunk driving, ease traffic congestion and curb air pollution.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly.
