Continued Help for NY's Returning Heroes

When a soldier completes their military service, many are looking for employment as part of a successful transition back to civilian life. Too often, our veterans who have sacrificed so much defending our nation, are finding it difficult to find new careers, despite often being highly qualified for the jobs that exist.

Recently, I was proud to support a bill that grants a two year extension of the state’s “Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit,” which helps to encourage businesses throughout New York to hire veterans. The credit is given to any business in the state that hires a veteran returning home from military service on a full time basis (35 hours per week) for at least one year. Businesses may earn up to $5,000 for hiring a qualified veteran and up to $15,000 if the veteran is also disabled.

Those who serve make enormous sacrifices every day. With the North Country home to so many 10th Mountain Division soldiers and their families—as well as hundreds of thousands of military veterans across Central New York and the rest of the state—this legislation is one way not only to continue to recognize their service, but also to encourage new economic opportunities.

There are many reasons why employers should consider making a veteran part of their workforce including their experience, dedication, attitude, leadership and work ethic—all attributes that make for great employees. If you’re a business owner looking to hire, I hope you will be part of the effort to support and thank these brave men and women by considering them for employment.  For more information on the Hire-a-Vet Tax Credit, click here.
