Senator Serrano's Park Legislation Passes New York State Senate

May 5, 2016

The New York State Senate passed Senator José M. Serrano's bill S705A which limits the ability of municipalities to sell off parkland without following established procedures--including the replacement of any public parkland that is taken away from the public. Public parkland greatly enhances quality of life, community character and acts as an economic engine throughout New York State. Serrano's bill makes the process of acquiring public park space for private use more stringent and transparent.

"As the Ranking Member of the Senate's Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation, I am happy to be able to give back to the park system that gives so much to New Yorkers. My legislation will better protect the public from being deprived of invaluable parkland and make it harder to put a price on our priceless public spaces. With the passage of this bill we are a step closer to ensuring that our green spaces will continue to flourish for generations to come."
