Senate Passes Stavisky Bill to Toughen Penalties for Graffiti Vandalism

Albany—The New York State Senate passed S3193A, a bill sponsored by Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing), which would toughen penalties for persons convicted of defacing public or private property with graffiti.

The bill upgrades offenders or persons who cause more than $1,000 worth of damage three or more times over the course of 10 years to a Class E felony.

“Graffiti vandalism is not a victimless crime,” said Senator Stavisky. “It can result in substantial costs to homeowners, property owners and taxpayers. This legislation is an important deterrent to destructive acts against public and private property.”

Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz (D-Electchester, Pomonok) sponsors the Assembly bill, A67. It is currently with the Assembly Codes Committee.
