Senator Larkin & Assemblyman Skoufis Pay Tribute To Cadets During West Point Day In Albany

Senator Bill Larkin (R,C,I– 39th District) and Assemblyman James Skoufis (D – Woodbury) today hosted the 64th  annual West Point Day at the New York State Capitol in Albany. The day pays tribute to The Point, which is the nation’s oldest continuously-operating Army post in the United States, while recognizing cadets from throughout New York State.  

Senator Larkin, who served in the United States Army for 23 years and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel said: “West Point Day is an annual reminder that one of our nation’s most significant military institutions is located right here in New York State. This important day provides us with the opportunity to honor New York’s cadets, the terrific young men and women who are destined to become our state and nation’s future leaders.”

West Point gives cadets a world-class education while preparing them to serve our nation and grow into leaders,” Assemblyman Skoufis said. “Today is an opportunity to honor these cadets and recognize the pivotal role the academy has played here in New York State and across the nation for more than two centuries.”

As part of West Point Day, Senator Larkin and Assemblyman Skoufis sponsored a legislative resolution in their respective chambers honoring the United States Military Academy at West Point.  They also joined several of their colleagues in acknowledging cadets from the districts they represent.  Cadets honored at the 2016 West Point Day include:

During the West Point Day ceremonies, Senator Larkin was presented with the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the Department of the Army. The medal is in recognition of the Senator’s distinguished performance and selfless service in support of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

 

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this prestigious service award from the Department of the Army,” said Senator Larkin. “While I am incredibly proud to receive this medal, I ask that we  take this moment and  pause to remember all of those who have and continue  to selflessly serve in our nation’s armed forces.”  

An estimated 1,200 new cadets enter the Academy each year. Currently, there are over 4,000 cadets enrolled at West Point from every state in the U.S., as well as from several foreign countries. After graduation, cadets are deployed throughout the world and serve on active duty for at least five years.
