Tedisco: Pass the School Bus Camera Safety Act
Senator James Tedisco
April 27, 2017
It's the law that you must stop on red when a school bus is picking up or dropping off kids.
Unfortunately, many people do not pay attention when they are driving and all too frequently disobey this very important public safety law and illegally pass stopped school busses.
Just last month, there were over 50,000 illegal passes of stopped school buses in New York State.
This is putting the lives of too many children at risk. That's why today Senator Jim Tedisco joined several of my colleagues, members of law enforcement, and school bus drivers from across the Capital Region to call for passage of legislation he is co-sponsoring: "The School Bus Camera Safety Act."
The bill (S.518), which is prime sponsored by Senator Cathy Young, would allow schools to put cameras on school buses to detect and record vehicles illegally passing or overtaking a school bus.
Several other states have enacted legislation similar including Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Iowa, Virginia, Connecticut, and Washington.
The legislation will help increase enforcement of the law and hopefully be a tool to help people be more mindful when the see a stopped school bus.
