SENATOR KLEIN PROVIDES LOCAL SENIORS WITH MOBILE HEALTH SERVICES AND SCRIE SPECIALISTS
February 2, 2017
Bronx, NY - Senator Jeff Klein provided various free health services, as well as the opportunity to sign up for a rent freeze program called the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) at an hour-long event at Van Cortlandt Senior Center on Thursday.
Dozens of attendees received free blood pressure screenings, elder abuse screenings and nutritional counseling. The pivotal health services were provided by the mobile health van operated by the Hebrew Home, which Senator Klein secured with $200,000 in state funding. The mobile vans routinely travel throughout the district, providing care to seniors in need.
Senior citizens were also screened and guided through the SCRIE application process by a worker from LiveOn NY, an organization that received $150,000 in funding from Senator Klein. With the help of the SCRIE specialist, community members learned if they were eligible for the rent freeze program. If the seniors qualified, they were set up with the proper assistance to move forward in the application process.
“It’s important our seniors have access to vital health services, which are provided by the Hebrew Home mobile health van. It’s also important that our seniors take full advantage of programs like SCRIE, which can save them money. With professional guidance from representatives at LiveOn NY, senior citizens are walked through the sometimes confusing application process to determine if they are eligible. And if they are, those same specialists will help them apply,” said Senator Klein.
