Senator Peralta Secures State Funding for CUNY School of Law to Provide Free Legal Services to Constituents

In response to several cases of discrimination against immigrants, State Senator Jose Peralta announced that he was able to secure a $50,000 state allocation to the CUNY School of Law’s Community Legal Resource Network in order to offer free legal counseling to constituents, with a specific focus on housing and immigration matters.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing a spike in discrimination cases in the district, mainly when it comes to housing and immigration. I am not going to tolerate this kind of behavior and allow anyone to treat my constituents as second-class citizens. This city was built and continues to be built by immigrants and their children, and we must ensure that no one discriminates against them,” Senator Peralta said. “I am glad to partner with the CUNY School of Law to provide much-needed legal assistance to my constituents.”

With these funds, the Community Legal Resource Network at CUNY Law School will provide alumni legal expertise in housing and immigration free of charge to constituents,” said Prof. Alizabeth Newman, Director Community Legal Resource Network at CUNY School of law.

The funding will provide a package of legal services, ranging from one-on-one legal counseling to targeted legal rights workshops. Immigration and housing are the two top issues constituents complain about when seeking assistance form Senator Peralta’s office.
