Jamestown Resident Peter Carlo Inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame

ALBANY – Jamestown resident Peter Carlo, a decorated Korean War veteran and dedicated advocate for veterans, has been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame following his nomination by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-57th District).

This annual recognition established in 2005 is bestowed upon a veteran from each Senate District in the state who has not only served valiantly in the military but has also performed outstanding service on behalf of their community as a civilian.

“Peter Carlo is a Purple Heart recipient who served our country bravely and with the utmost selflessness during the Korean War. There is no greater testament to his courage and dedication than the fact that he returned to the front line even after being severely wounded in a blast which permanently imbedded nearly 100 pieces of shrapnel in his legs and back,” said Senator Young.

“Despite his injuries and the difficulties of wartime, Mr. Carlo’s service only deepened his patriotism and his appreciation for the sacrifices of all our servicemen and women. That is why he has made it his mission to donate American flags to schools, fire departments, nonprofits and community organizations around the Jamestown area in support of America and its veterans. He wants to ensure that people always remember those who served and sacrificed to protect America’s liberty. In every way, Peter Carlo exemplifies the spirit of this award.”

Peter Carlo was an Army machine gunner with Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Infantry Regiment, Second Infantry Division, which was known as the “Indianhead Division.” He fought in five major battles including Inchon, and was at the front line when the truce to end the Korean War was signed.

His dedication, courage and leadership earned him numerous awards, including the Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. His service stretched from 1952 to 1954 and he left the Army as a corporal.

After completing his military service, Mr. Carlo returned to Jamestown to work in the family business. His father had a fruit market in Jamestown, which he inherited and grew to six stores.

In addition to running his business, he has been actively involved in many veteran and community organizations. He is the past commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and a member of AMVETS. He served as chair of the Handicapped Boy Scouts of New York State for five years. He also donated a 600-pound boulder with a plaque on behalf of the DAV for the Veterans Park in Jamestown in memory of all deceased veterans.

A special initiative of Mr. Carlo’s has been the donation of  American flags to local schools, municipalities, fire departments, hospitals, youth groups and veterans’ organizations. All the flags he donates have been flown over the U.S. Capitol. He explained, “I believe in America. I love Jamestown and the people in this city. As a veteran, I feel that I should give something back to the city…” He has presented more than 300 flags.

“Peter Carlo’s devotion to his country and to fellow veterans goes above and beyond the call of duty. It is an honor to be able to recognize him and have his story memorialized in the state’s record,” Senator Young said.

Senator Young will honor Mr. Carlo at a special ceremony in Jamestown at a later date which will be announced.
