Senator Fred Akshar continued the second year of his district-wide “Akshar's All-Stars” student recognition program on Tuesday by recognizing students at four Tioga County schools - Tioga Central, Waverly, Spencer Van-Etten and Candor.
Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers.
Last school year, Akshar recognized 30 students across school districts in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties. This year, Akshar's recognized students at Susquehanna Valley, Chenango Valley, Chenango Forks and Whitney Point.
For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star”, Senator Akshar presents them with a t-shirt, framed certificate and a challenge coin.
At Tioga Central High School, Akshar recognized senior Benjamin Coddington for his willingness to help “anyone and everyone with anything.” In addition to his busy list of clubs, activities and musical performances, Ben is at the top of his class academically despite a course load comprised entirely of college courses. Ben has maintained perfect attendance throughout his school career and will graduate with an Associate's Degree through the TC4 program.
At Waverly High School, Akshar recognized junior Kaleigh Akins for her selfless devotion to charity and giving back to her community. In addition to participating in various clubs, sports and music, Kaleigh volunteers her time at local child care centers. Kaleigh also founded the non-profit “Kaleigh's White Bags of Hope,” when she was just 14 years old. The organization delivers white handmade bags to those battling cancer in local hospitals like Guthrie and Lourdes. Kaleigh completely self-funds her organization and works off of donations and the occasional bottle and can collection. This year the Waverly District used Halloween to support Kaleigh's endeavors by asking for donations instead of giving out trick-or-treat bags within the buildings.
At Spencer Van-Etten High School, Akshar recognized senior Daniel Snowman for his selflessness and supportiveness both inside and outside the classroom. An active volunteer at school and church, Daniel has been described by his peers and teachers as a compassionate friend to all at Spencer Van-Etten who helps make the culture of his school district a warm and welcoming place.
At Candor High School, Akshar recognized junior Camille Brock for her excellent work ethic both in her college level courses and in her various commitments outside of school. Camille works at a local pumpkin farm, volunteers as a youth soccer referee, serves students with special needs at the Lion’s Badger Camp and was nationally recognized for her leadership by Key Club as a Regional Representative.
Senator Fred Akshar said, "This is an amazing opportunity for us to meet and recognize outstanding young people doing wonderful things in their community and schools throughout the 52nd Senate District. Whether they're in 2nd grade or a senior in high school, we want to bring attention to those students who are making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. They inspire us all by showing us the good that exists in our communities.”
