4.11.18 - Senator Fred Akshar continues “Akshar's All-Stars” student recognition program at Hancock, Waverly, and Spencer-Van Etten

Senator Fred Akshar visited three more local schools this week to continue his “Akshar's All-Stars” district-wide student recognition program.

Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers.

For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star” Senator Akshar presents them with a t-shirt, framed certificate and a challenge coin.

Over the past few months, Akshar has recognized 23 students at Maine-Endwell Middle School, Windsor Central School District, Harpursville Central High School, Tioga Central High School, Vestal Middle School, Oxford High School, Norwich High School, DCMO BOCES, Deposit High School, Newark Valley High School, Union-Endicott High School, Greene High School, Owego Free Academy, Candor High School, Broome-Tioga BOCES, Afton High School, Whitney Point High School, Seton Catholic Central, Binghamton West and East Middle Schools, Chenango Valley High School and Bainbridge-Guilford High School.

At Hancock High School, Akshar recognized junior Thomas Schoonmaker for his ambition, perseverence and character. Thomas has been able to balance his commitments as a YES Leader, Class Treasurer, Varsity First Team All-Star Bowler, NYSPHAA Scholar Athlete, Member of Youth Group and Member of National Honor Society with his academic commitments and is currently on track to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate's Degree from Tompkins Cortland Community College.

At Waverly Middle School, Akshar recognized 5th grader Sara Lampman for her remarkably positive influence on her friends, peers and school. Sara is a special needs student who truly exemplifies the spirit and intent of Akshar's All-Stars. Her outgoing and friendly attitude, her infectious smile and her ability to produce joy in those around her continually lifts the spirits of her fellow students and faculty members throughout the school year.

At Spencer - Van Etten High School, Akshar recognized senior Faith Kelly for her athletic and academic leadership amongst her peers. Faith is a multi-sport athlete who also maintains a high GPA with a challenging course load. She also serves as a volunteer firefighter, volunteers for the Salvation Army, youth sports, Tioga Office for the Aging and she leads the Youth Fire Camp. Getting a jump start on a career in nursing, Faith also passed the Certified Nursing Assistant exam while still in high school.

Whether they're in 2nd grade or a senior in high school, we want to bring attention to those students who are making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. They inspire us all by showing us the good that exists in our communities.”
