Statement From Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan
May 22, 2018
Since Eric Schneiderman first announced his resignation from the Office of Attorney General, our Senate Republican Majority made clear that no one who intended to seek this office in November should be a candidate to fill the position in the short-term.
In addition, we spoke highly of the qualifications of Barbara Underwood and our preference that she serve out the remainder of the unexpired term. We are pleased that this was the formal recommendation of the screening committee which included Senators LaValle, Little, Gallivan, and Murphy, and that today the Legislature has acted to make her Attorney General.
I thank Attorney General Underwood for her willingness to serve the people of New York and for stepping into this position during a difficult time. She has an outstanding resume and I have absolute confidence she will continue to ably lead this office for the remainder of the year.
