Sen. Griffo secures funding for Deputy Kurt B. Wyman Memorial Park

ORISKANY – While at a special ceremony today to remember fallen Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Kurt B. Wyman, state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-I-Rome, announced that he has secured $200,000 in funding that will go toward efforts to honor the 24-year-old deputy killed in the line of duty seven years ago.

The funding will go towards the construction of the Deputy Kurt B. Wyman Memorial Park at 5230 Judd Road in Whitesboro. Wyman, who had honorably served as a member of the United States Marine Corps, was shot and killed while on duty at a domestic dispute on June 7, 2011. 

For the last several years, the Deputy Wyman Foundation has been working with the Town of Whitestown in the construction of the park as a way to honor Wyman. The park will feature a memorial monument and is expected to feature multiple sports field as a tribute to Wyman’s love for children and his passion for soccer.

“Deputy Wyman was a good husband, father and son who devoted his life and his career to serving and protecting his community,” Sen. Griffo said. “He left behind a strong legacy that will never be forgotten. I know that this park will only add to that legacy and will serve as a reminder to everyone about the tremendous sacrifice made by Deputy Wyman on that fateful day in June. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to help keep that legacy alive.”

“We have a very tight-knit group of volunteers who came together after Kurt’s passing and have worked hard to ensure that his memory is kept alive in perpetuity,” said David Sherline, president of the Deputy Wyman Foundation. “We want to thank Sen. Griffo for his support of this great cause. This grant will go a very long way in helping with the completion of the Deputy Wyman Park and serves as a key component of helping to make Kurt's Memorial Park dream become reality for his family and those who loved him.”

“This funding will go a long way to ensuring that we never forget the sacrifice made by Deputy Wyman for Oneida County and its residents,” said Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.“I would like to thank Sen. Griffo for helping to keep Deputy Wyman’s memory alive.” 

“Although Deputy Wyman was taken from us far too soon, the Town of Whitestown is excited that the portion of our Town Park very fittingly named in his honor is receiving significant funding,” said Town of Whitestown Supervisor Shaun Kaleta. “The funding will allow the Town and Deputy Wyman Foundation, Inc. to start the next phase of development, which includes the construction of a comfort station featuring a concession, bathrooms and storage area, and additional parking space. Most importantly, the funding will bring us one big step closer to completing park construction and making our vision a reality, ensuring that Deputy Wyman’s memory will always live on. I would like to thank Sen. Griffo for his continued support of our efforts.”
