Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele Announce Legislative Approval for Distinctive 9/11 License Plates

June 5, 2018  – Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced that this week, both the State Senate and Assembly approved their legislation to establish special license plates for the victims of 9/11. 

The bill would commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by authorizing the issuance of distinctive commemorative license plates.  Portions of the charges collected for the plate would be used for the purpose of providing scholarship money for the families of the September eleventh victims.

Senator LaValle said, “On September 11, 2001, our nation and, in particular our state, experienced an unforgettable tragedy.  Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.  The families of those who tragically lost their lives can take some comfort in knowing that no one has forgotten, and feel an additional measure of relief in knowing that their children will have scholarship funds set aside for college tuition.”

Assemblyman Thiele stated said, “On September 11, 2001 our nation experienced an unforgettable tragedy.  Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which crashed in western Pennsylvania. These commemorative license plates will serve as a vivid and continuing reminder of the lives lost, the courage found, and the sacrifices made. This legislation sends a powerful message that they have not been forgotten."

The legislation recognizes and commemorates all of those affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center by authorizing the creation of distinctive commemorative New York State license plates.  Portions of the fees for the plates would be collected and deposited into the “World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program”.

An annual service charge of twenty-five dollars would be applied to the plates by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Twenty dollars of this annual sum shall be deposited to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program, which was established under section 608 of the Education Law.

The bill (S6072/A.7715) will be transferred to the Governor for consideration
