Ortt Co-Sponsors Deadline Extender

Recently, Senator Rob Ortt (R,C,I,Ref-North Tonawanda) joined 12 of his colleagues in the Senate and co-sponsored legislation that would extend the state’s pistol recertification deadline by an additional two months. This legislation would extend the pistol permit recertification deadline to March 31, 2018, allowing New York’s pistol permit holders the necessary time to comply with the change in law.

“With the cloud of uncertainty that surrounds the recertification process, a delay to the deadline would benefit both our state authorities and pistol permit holders across New York,” said Sen. Ortt. “Many pistol permit holders are only now learning now of the need to recertify at no fault other than a lack of information distributed by the State, and to go ahead with the January 31 deadline would only create thousands of criminals out of law-abiding gun owners.”

Sen. Ortt has been a leading voice in calls to delay the upcoming recertification deadline, being one of the first Senators to hold a press conference on an issue, which at the time, was unknown to many across the state. 

“I am proud to join my colleagues in co-sponsoring Senate Bill 7343, and am calling on all resident pistol permit holders to try their best to comply with the current deadline,” said Ortt. “While we fight back against the constitutionally intrusive NY SAFE Act, we must be sure to stay on the right side of the law. The confusion and mess surrounding the recertification deadline is just the latest example of how the NY SAFE Act has done more harm than good”
