(Albany, NY) The Senate Majority passed legislation (S.1414-A) co-sponsored by Senator Anna M. Kaplan that will ban undetectable guns, including 3D-printed guns, from being manufactured and sold across New York State. This legislation expands on gun safety legislation previously passed, and will continue to save lives by criminalizing the manufacturing, sale, transport, and possession of firearms, rifles, shotguns, and the major components of weapons that are undetectable by an X-ray machine.
Senator Anna M. Kaplan said “My top priority as Senator is ensuring the safety of our schools and communities, that’s why I proudly co-sponsored a ban on dangerous “ghost guns” that can be made at home, don’t trigger metal detectors, and circumvent existing gun safety laws. It’s a common sense reform that New Yorkers want, and we need to take this action right away to further protect our communities from senseless gun violence.”
The legislation passed by the Senate Majority includes:
- Protecting New Yorkers by making it illegal for any person to knowingly possess, manufacture, sell, transport, or possess firearms, which cannot be detectable by an X-ray machine.
- Establishing certain crimes relating to the criminal manufacture or possession of an undetectable firearm, rifle, or shotgun.
Following years of the former Senate Republican Majority blocking meaningful gun safety legislation, the new Senate Democratic Majority has taken historic steps to protect New York communities from gun violence. Within the first month of the Legislative Session, the new Senate Democratic Majority passed sweeping anti-gun violence legislation to protect New Yorkers. Several weeks later, the Senate Democratic Majority took more action against gun violence by passing measures to protect New York children.
