Senator Sanders' Bills Regarding Voting & Health Signed Into Law by Governor Cuomo

Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) is proud to announce that two of his bills were signed into law today by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The first will improve the ease of voting and the second will provide health information to the formerly incarcerated.

More information on the bills are below:

S1590 - Requires the state board of elections to create a system to allow a copy of the candidate and contest information contained on each ballot style submitted by each county board of elections to be accessible to the public via web.

“This bill will improve ease of access to information about candidates running for elected office, giving more people the ability to research who would be the best choice." Senator Sanders said. "It will also, hopefully, encourage more people to vote overall, since as American citizens we should all be participating in the Democratic process.”

S.5945 - Establishes the department of corrections shall provide an inmate, upon his or her discharge, with educational information about the prevention of HIV.

"HIV is still a hidden crisis in our jails and our prisons," Sanders said. "We need to bring HIV prevention information to people wherever they are. Addressing the formerly incarcerated is one of the important ways we can make a breakthrough in educating people on how to protect themselves from this disease."
