(Peekskill, NY) Senator Pete Harckham, 40th Senate District, is pleased to announce that he obtained $15,000 in NYS Senate Bullet Aid funding for the Yorktown Community Nursery School to make walkways and entrances ADA compliant. The nonprofit, nonsectarian pre-school, which opened its doors nearly 70 years ago, is owned, maintained and run by the parents of the children enrolled in the school. Its cooperative philosophy supports families and allows parents to play an integral role in their child's early education.
Senator Harckham said, “I’m happy that we could provide funding for the Yorktown Community Nursery School that will be used to make it more accessible for children and adults with differing abilities. This community-run gem has been providing high-quality programs for pre-schoolers since 1948 and, has been demonstrating to their very involved parent body how to effectively support the learning process. They believe, as I do, that we are stronger when everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.”
Maribeth Fay, Director, Yorktown Community Nursery School, said, "We would like to express our sincerest thanks to Senator Pete Hackham for his assistance in securing a grant that will allow our cooperative nursery school to become ADA compliant. The scope of the project includes the installation of a pathway from the road to the building and ramps from the back door of the classrooms to the playground, making our school accessible for students and family members with disabilities. We are now truly able to uphold our mission of providing a constructive program to enrich the lives of all children in the community. Senator Harckham's support is deeply appreciated by the Board, staff and parents of our school.”
