Senator Harckham Prioritizes Family Safety and Announces Passage of Gun Safety Package

(Albany, NY) In response to repeated tragedies caused by gun violence, Senator Pete Harckham (SD40) voted in favor of a package of major gun safety measures, which were passed by the Senate Majority in the NYS Senate today. The measures include the Extreme Risk Protection Order/Red Flag Bill (S.2451), which revokes gun access from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others and a bill that bans bump stocks and other rapid-fire modifying devices (S.2448).

"Common sense prevailed today and we have taken steps to keep our families safer,” said Senator Pete Harckham, 40th Senate District. "Banning bump stocks and empowering families and law enforcement to suspend a dangerous person’s access to guns are prudent ways to protect our communities.These bills are overwhelmingly supported by New Yorkers and do not infringe on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.”

      Studies have proven that states, like New York, with stronger firearm safety laws, have fewer gun-related deaths. New Yorkers deserve to feel safe from gun violence whether they’re at school or work or the mall or at a concert or at a theater.

New York State Senate District 40 includes parts of Northern Westchester (Briarcliff Manor, Buchanan, Cortlandt, Croton-on-Hudson, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, Mount Pleasant, New Castle, North Salem, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Pound Ridge, Sleepy Hollow, Somers, Yorktown) Putnam (Brewster, Carmel, Patterson, Southeast) and Dutchess (Beekman, Pawling).
