Statement from Senator Metzger on Charges Filed Against Opioid Manufacturer for Fraudulently Misrepresenting Safety of Drugs

I applaud this effort by the Governor to hold Endo accountable for its shameful advertising tactics, which took countless lives for the sake of profit. By misrepresenting the addictiveness of opioids, the drug company encouraged over-prescription and helped create the crisis we are in. The communities I represent suffer opioid-related death rates that far exceed the state average, and earlier this year I introduced legislation (S5653-A) to crack down on over-prescribing and help prevent addiction and its devastating consequences. Should the State win this suit, I hope that funds will be devoted to Substance Use Disorder prevention and treatment efforts. New Yorkers deserve restitution.
