Harckham Holds Food Drive in Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow, NY – New York State Senator Pete Harckham held a food drive today in Sleepy Hollow, and 40 volunteers collected more than 10,000 pounds of donated food and $2,000 in contributions for the Community Food Pantry of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.
Packed boxes of food, which included oatmeal, peanut butter, vegetable oil, rice, cold cereal, tuna, beans, canned soup, pasta and other staples, filled the flatbeds on four pick-up trucks and the backs of two SUVs. Face masks and reusable grocery bags were donated as well.
“Too many people are now food insecure because of the economic devastation caused by the new coronavirus pandemic, and they need help now,” said Harckham. “This community really stepped up today, and I am very grateful to the volunteers and donors who helped make this food drive so successful. It is heartwarming and inspiring to know that there are so many special people who care about their neighbors.”
Harckham added special thanks to Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray, the Sleepy Hollow Board of Trustees, the village’s Department of Public Works and the Sleepy Hollow Police Department for help in organizing the event.
Also deserving special recognition, Harckham noted, was the Kendal on Hudson retirement community, which donated two trucks’ worth of food; and the Sleepy Hollow High School Football Boosters Club, which brought a number of volunteers to the event (including several junior varsity and varsity football players) along with a $300 donation.
The food drive was held in the parking lot across the street from Village Hall on Beekman Avenue in Sleepy Hollow. It was “drive through, drop off” event; and one kind donor even stopped by on his skateboard to drop off a bag of food.
