Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) sponsored a resolution (J.414) adopted by the New York State Senate proclaiming May 16-22, 2021 as Emergency Medical Services Week across the state. The observance is in conjunction with National EMS Week and honors the service of those who provide “front line” lifesaving treatment for New York residents.
“At a moment’s notice, EMS personnel respond to individuals suffering from sudden illness and injury and provide lifesaving care in communities across our state,” Senator Gallivan said. “Whether they are career professionals or volunteers, these men and women undergo specialized training and continuing education to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to serve their neighbors. All New Yorkers should be thankful for the valuable, around-the-clock service they provide.”
The EMS system consists of physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, medical volunteers and others.
Approximately 2.8 million calls are handled by Emergency Medical Service providers each year in New York State.
