“I’m extremely disappointed by the decision to close Moriah Shock. A bi-partisan group of local and state elected officials petitioned Governor Hochul and the Department of Corrections, urging them to keep Moriah Shock open and highlighting its value to our communities and public safety.
“Moriah Shock presented an alternate path to traditional incarceration and rehabilitation, one that helped reduce the recidivism rate to 50 percent less than that of general population facilities. Its success made our communities safer and had the additional benefit of providing taxpayer savings and jobs to its home community. Instead of closing Moriah Shock, the state should be using it as a statewide example in the effort to make communities safer and offer incarcerated individuals a path forward to a better future.”
