Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) sponsored a resolution (J.1640) adopted by the New York State Senate proclaiming May 15-21, 2022 as Emergency Medical Services Week across the state. The observance is in conjunction with National EMS Week and honors the service of those who provide “front line” lifesaving treatment for New York residents.
“EMS personnel provide lifesaving services around-the-clock in communities across our state,” Senator Gallivan said. “Whether they are career professionals or volunteers, these men and women undergo many hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to serve their neighbors. All New Yorkers should be thankful for the service they provide.”
The EMS system consists of physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, medical volunteers and others.
“One example of the critical work performed by EMS providers took place in Buffalo this past weekend when dozens of first responders raced to the scene of a mass shooting at a neighborhood supermarket. Their quick action in the face of danger prevented a terrible tragedy from becoming even worse. I thank them and their colleagues across the state for their dedicated service.”
More than 50,000 EMS providers, whether career or volunteer, handle approximately 2.8 million calls for service each year in New York State.
