October 6, 2022
(Armonk, NY) – New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer today presented the New York State Empire Award, given to nonprofit organizations and small businesses that have positively impacted their communities, to American Legion Post 1097 for its dedication to veterans and for its commitment to accessibility.
Senator Shelley B. Mayer said: “I am pleased to honor American Legion Post 1097 with the New York State Empire Award. The organization plays a key role in keeping veterans connected and leading the next generation in civic life. I applaud the Post and Westchester County’s efforts to upgrade the building and to ensure it continues to be accessible for disabled and aging veterans for many years to come.”
American Legion Post 1097 recently completed construction on a handicap accessible bathroom and added a handicap stairlift to its rear entrance at its facility located at 35 Bedford Road, Armonk. Additional improvements include new exterior doors, light fixtures, windows, paint and carpeting. The work was made possible through a $60,500 grant the Post received from Westchester County.
American Legion Post 1097 Treasurer Tony Cicia said: “We are very honored and thankful to Senator Shelley Mayer for this prestigious award and for her friendship. We are also grateful to Senator Mayer and Westchester County Executive George Latimer for the generous grant we received which has enabled us to make much needed improvements and to make Post 1097 accessible to all.”
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Recognizing those who have served to protect our freedoms, while giving them space to gather here at home, is of the utmost importance to Westchester County. We are honored to have assisted in this renovation and we thank Senator Shelley Mayer for this special Empire Award tribute recognizing American Legion Post 1097.”
This year, Senator Mayer has also presented Empire Awards to Today’s Students Tomorrow’s Teachers, The Bronxville Women’s Club and Women’s Enterprise Development Center.
