Hinchey Statement on Holtec’s Proposal to Accelerate Release of Radioactive Wastewater into the Hudson River
April 6, 2023
KINGSTON, NY — State Senator Michelle Hinchey released the following statement in opposition to Holtec’s decision to inform the Indian Point Energy Center Decommissioning Oversight Board that it intends to accelerate the timeline at which it plans to release radioactive wastewater from the nuclear power plant into the Hudson River.
It’s disgraceful that Holtec is more focused on putting corporate profit over the health and safety of our Hudson River, not to mention a complete affront to the local communities and coalition of advocates that have been working, in good faith, to move forward feasible alternatives to immediately discharging millions of gallons of radioactive wastewater into our water supply. Holtec has clearly underestimated the will of our Hudson Valley communities and its legislators in protecting our Hudson River. That’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor Senator Pete Harckham’s bill to ban these planned releases and will continue working to ensure our communities and the Hudson River are protected for generations to come.
