Senator Gallivan Urges Eligible Residents to Consider a Career with NYS Police

NYS Police Graduation
Applications for Trooper Exam Now Being Accepted

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) says the New York State Police have kicked off a new recruiting effort to find the most highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates to serve and protect state residents.  Senator Gallivan, a former Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, is urging eligible individuals to sign up to take the NYS Trooper exam, which is being offered now until mid-October.

“The New York State Police represent one of the best law enforcement agencies in the country with a proud tradition of service,” Senator Gallivan said.  “To help ensure public safety, we must recruit the best possible candidates who are dedicated to defending New Yorkers. I encourage eligible individuals who are interested in a rewarding career to apply to take the entrance exam.”

Candidates must be a citizen of the United States, be at least 20 years of age by the date of application, and be a high school graduate or have an equivalency diploma.  They must not have reached their 35th birthday by the date of application.

The state recently raised the maximum age to apply from 29 to 34 in an effort to increase the number of applicants.  The maximum age may also be extended one year for each year of full-time active military duty, up to a maximum of 7 years.

Exams are being offered at 54 testing centers across the state and candidates will be able to choose a testing site, date and time that is most convenient for them.

Applicants can learn more about the process, the qualification and can apply to take the exam by visiting www.joinstatepolice.ny.gov
