SENATOR SEAN RYAN HONORS CAMPUS WHEELWORKS AS MAY ‘SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH’
Nomination Window for June Award Open Until June 18
BUFFALO – Today, May 31, 2023, New York State Senator Sean Ryan announced that Campus WheelWorks has been selected as the 61st Senate District Small Business of the Month for May. Senator Ryan will present the store’s owners with a New York State Senate Empire Award in recognition of their work to grow and support Buffalo’s cycling community.
Campus WheelWorks has served Buffalo for 50 years, beginning as part of Clayton’s Toys on Elmwood Avenue in 1973. Campus Bike Shop later opened on Elmwood Avenue in 1975, and in 1996 it became Campus WheelWorks. Under current ownership, the store has expanded to a second location on Niagara Street. In the last decade, Campus WheelWorks has done extensive work to support the Western New York community.
- In 2016, its owners founded Campus Cycling Collective, a non-profit designed to foster participation in cycling and other outdoor activities through group rides and other events.
- During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many gyms and indoor cycling studios closed, Campus WheelWorks offered free bike rentals to help get people outdoors for socially distanced recreation.
- After the mass shooting that targeted Buffalo’s East Side in May 2022, Campus WheelWorks provided donations to the East Side Bike Club to distribute to members of the community. WheelWorks coordinated with GObike Buffalo to rehabilitate dozens of used bikes and worked with vendors to secure brand new bikes and other cycling gear.
Senator Sean Ryan said, “As an avid bike rider myself, I know just how valuable cycling can be as both a hobby and a workout. Campus WheelWorks has been a fixture of our community for decades, and they have done a lot of incredible work to spread the love of biking throughout Western New York. I am proud to present them with this award in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the Buffalo community.”
Senator Ryan will continue to highlight businesses that deserve special recognition for their contributions to the Western New York community throughout 2023. To nominate a business for the June award, individuals should fill out the nomination form here or at ryan.nysenate.gov by Sunday, June 18.
