Myrie Statement on Clean Slate
June 12, 2023

ALBANY– Senator Zellnor Y. Myrie (D-Central Brooklyn) issued the following statement upon passage of Clean Slate:
“By passing Clean Slate, we have taken a vote of conscience, but also a vote of confidence. Confidence in the power of redemption. Confidence that no one's worth or value should be limited by the worst thing they've ever done. Confidence that our laws and criminal sentences have meaning. Confidence in our economy. Confidence that access to jobs, housing, education and healthcare leads to stronger and safer communities.
“Clean Slate breaks down the barriers keeping those who have served their time from stabilizing themselves and supporting their families. New Yorkers understand that giving a second chance to those people who have paid their debts is fair, honest and just. That's why Clean Slate is backed by the largest and broadest coalition of any bill in state history.
“I'm so proud of and grateful to this coalition and to my partners in government for advancing this bill, which is literally life-changing for millions of New Yorkers. Our family members, friends and neighbors can't wait for Clean Slate, but after today's vote, their wait is nearly over.”
