GOP Members of the NYS Senate’s Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Business Committee share their Inflation Relief Plan with Governor Hochul

(Senator’s Murray, Helming, and Borrello outline their plan in a letter to the Governor)
(Patchogue, NY) – As the ranking minority member of the Senate’s Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee, NYS Senator Dean Murray, teamed with his colleagues, Senator Pamela Helming and Senator George Borrello, to propose a comprehensive plan aimed at providing inflation relief to all New Yorkers. The three GOP committee members recently sent a letter to Governor Hochul outlining their strategy, which they believe can effectively address some of the financial burdens families and small businesses are facing. Their proposal offers a targeted approach designed to help a greater number of both consumers and businesses, while fostering ongoing economic stability across the state. This would not be a one-shot savings, but instead, their proposal would help all New Yorkers save money on an on-going basis.

The Senators emphasized that their plan is a practical solution to ease the strain caused by rising costs of living and doing business in New York. By focusing on policies that provide longer term relief to both households and businesses, the Senators believe their approach can mitigate the impact of inflation more effectively than a temporary, one-shot solution. The Senators believe their plan will also reduce debt that New York State currently holds with the federal government.

“The best way to bring relief from inflation is to lower costs,” said NYS Senator Dean Murray, 3rd District. “Eliminating a massive business expense, like the UIAS, allows businesses to pass their savings on to consumers by reducing the costs of goods and services. This benefits businesses AND consumers, bringing true, long-term relief to all New Yorkers,” added Senator Murray.

“The state must take full financial responsibility for its UI debt to the federal government and end this burden on our small businesses and family farms,” said NYS Senator Pamela Helming, 54th District. “If we truly want to help our employers grow and protect local jobs, we must reduce the cost of doing business in New York State. Our economic success depends on it,” said NYS Senator Pamela Helming (Senate District 54)

“Instead of following the commonsense approach of other states and using some of the billions in federal COVID aid to pay down the unemployment debt, the governor unfairly shifted the burden to New York’s businesses and employers through the Unemployment Insurance Assessment Surcharge (UIAS),” said Senator George Borrello. “Since the UI deficit stems from the government-mandated shutdown during the pandemic, it is only fair that employers are not left to shoulder these costs,” remarked NYS Senator George Borrello (Senate District 57)
