Joint Statement from Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Assemblymember Harvey Epstein and Councilmember Carlina Rivera Regarding the Tragic Death of Yazmeen Williams at Straus Houses
July 9, 2024
We are devastated by the heartbreaking death of Yazmeen Williams, and we share in the grief and outrage many in our community are feeling at this moment.
Our hearts go out to Yazmeen’s family, particularly her mother, Nicole Williams, who has shown immense strength during this unimaginably difficult time. Yazmeen was a bright and accomplished individual, a graduate of Buffalo State University with a degree in criminal justice, and she had just begun a promising career with the New York City Housing Authority. The loss of someone so deeply committed to the wellbeing of her neighbors is immeasurable. This tragedy has left a void in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.
We understand the community’s frustration and the desire for justice. Members of the Straus Houses community have voiced their concerns and requested more security cameras to enhance safety. We will do everything in our power to improve safety and security in Straus Houses, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that all residents feel safe in their homes.
