Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, (R-C, Elma) presented a Lancaster business with one of the New York State Senate’s highest honors, the Senate Empire Award. Senator Gallivan recognized The New York Store for its longevity and business success.
Senator Gallivan also recognized Ken's Service and Sales in Marilla for its longevity and business success.
"Small businesses are the backbone of our community and play a vital role in our state's overall economy," Senator Gallivan said. "It is important to recognize outstanding businesses that provide needed services, employ residents and have achieved a level of excellence over a number of years."
The New York Store on Central Avenue in Lancaster is celebrating 95 years in business, specializing in men's clothing and women's sportswear. President Alan Kurtzman says his grandfather opened the store in the village in 1929. Alan and his sister, Elaine, are the third generation to work at the store.
Ken's Service and Sales was founded in 1955. The motorsports store on Clinton Street in Marilla sells and services off-road vehicles, ATV's, snowmobiles, motorcycles, lawnmowers, and other outdoor power equipment. Matt Kelchlin is the third-generation owner of the family business.
This Empire Award recognizes businesses that are considered leaders in their industry, those who use innovative methods, increase jobs, spur economic growth, make efforts to hire veterans or individuals with disabilities, and are family-owned businesses passed from one generation to the next.
