Applications for Entrance Exam Now Being Accepted

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) says the New York State Police are accepting applications for the Trooper Entrance Examination, with testing to begin on August 15, 2024. 

Gallivan, a former Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, says the state is investing $66 million to fund additional State Police academy classes, in an effort to find the most qualified and diverse pool of candidates to serve and protect state residents.

“The New York State Police is one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the country and serving as a Trooper is a challenging and rewarding career,” Senator Gallivan said.  I encourage eligible individuals who are interested to sign up and take the entrance exam.”

Candidates must be a citizen of the United States and be at least 20 years old and a maximum of 34 years old at the time of application.  The maximum age may also be extended one year for each year of full-time active military duty, up to a maximum of 7 years.  Applicants must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. 

The starting salary for Academy appointees is $59,612.  After one year of service, the minimum compensation rises to $98,300 with full health benefits and a retirement plan.

Candidates can learn more about the process and apply to take the exam by visiting www.joinstatepolice.ny.gov. Once candidates apply, they can sign up to take the computerized exam at a testing center at a time and location convenient for them. 

Applicants must pay a $20 fee at the time of the application and a $44 fee when scheduling the exam.
