BROOKLYN – NY. On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Senator Roxanne J. Persaud partnered with the American – Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF) to host a one-hour Breast Health Webinar on Zoom and Facebook Live to provide information regarding breast health and to walk constituents through what happens when receiving a mammogram or clinical breast exam on AICF’s Mammogram Bus.
The webinar presentation was given by Ruth Vega, Director of Cancer Screening at AICF. Ms. Vega’s presentation covered the history and mission of AICF and information about breast cancer including warning signs, and risk factors. The main objective of the discussion was to remove fear of mammograms by providing knowledge and information to help viewers feel comfortable about getting a cancer screening. Webinar audience members asked several questions, including "why do some people avoid getting mammograms?". Senator Persaud assured participants that “there is nothing to be afraid of; this is about your health”. The presentation also included information about what to look for during a self-examination.
"I've worked diligently on a number of legislation that holds insurance companies accountable for certain testing that can identify disease; it's a fact that early screening and testing can save lives" said Senator Persaud.
Senator Persaud has been working with AICF for several years to bring additional services to Senate District 19 constituents. Senator Persaud recently awarded AICF with capital funding to assist with the purchase of new 3D digital mammography equipment for the Mammogram Bus. AICF is best known in Senate District 19 for its free Mammogram Bus screenings at the district office.
Appointments are still available for the next screening event taking place on Thursday, June 27th. Constituents wishing to schedule an appointment are asked to call (718) 649-7653.
