"One year ago today, Hamas launched a brutal attack on southern Israel, murdering over 1,200 Israelis in their homes and at an outdoor concert, and taking more than 200 civilians hostage — at least 100 of whom are still held in captivity. This event marked the beginning of a year of increasing conflict in the region, involving Israel, Gaza and neighboring nations and resulting in horrific numbers of civilian casualties on all sides. I was and remain heartbroken over all of the lives lost.
"I remain steadfast in my support for Israel’s right to exist and defend itself from attacks on its citizens. I believe the hostages must be brought home now while we work toward an end to the overall conflict.
"I remain committed to finally finding a resolution that allows Israelis, Palestinians, and people throughout the Middle East to live side by side in peace, cooperation, and mutual understanding. I still believe this is not only possible, but essential."
