Sen. Cleare at AARP Press Conference

Sen. Cleare speaks at AARP Elder Justice Press Event

Today, Senator Cordell Cleare spoke at the American Association of Retired People’s (AARP) Elder Fraud press conference. Senator Cleare has been working with AARP to fight Elder Financial Exploitation. In New York State alone, Senior Citizens have $3 Billion stolen from them through fraud schemes. Senator Cleare commends AARP for their continued advocacy on behalf of Older New Yorkers.

Earlier this year, as the chair of the Aging Committee, Senator Cleare introduced and passed Senate Bill S.1202 which would establish an interagency Elder Justice Task Force. Examples of agencies that this task force would include are the Director for the Office of the Aging, director of the office of victims services, the superintendent of financial services. Please see the attached bill page for more information on S.1202.

At the Press conference, Senator Cordell Cleare said, “As vile as it may be for anyone to commit a crime against a Senior, sadly, technology is only facilitating the exponential growth of exploitation. Therefore, we construct a system that is proactive and empowering for our Older New Yorkers, one that shuts down the pipeline of scams and reinforces the fact that technology and common sense can work hand in hand to protect our people.”
