Queens, NY - State Senator John Liu, Chair of the Senate Committee on NYC Education, stated the following about President Trump’s move to shutter the U.S. Department of Education.

“President Trump’s reckless attempt to dismantle the Department of Education is an egregious attack on schoolkids across the nation. Not only will this jeopardize the education of millions of children, but it stands to strip billions in crucial funding from needy schools in underserved communities, and undermine decades of progress in ensuring equal access to quality education. Education is, as it should be, a fundamental responsibility of every level of government, and it should not be solely relegated to states, which vary wildly across the nation in philosophy, funding, and focus. New York stands with students, families, teachers and educators across the country in opposition to this illegal, unconstitutional, and destructive overreach, and we will continue fighting to ensure students here in New York have the tools they need to succeed.”
