North Brooklyn Electeds Call for the Public Service Commission to Reject ConEdison’s Proposed Rate Hikes

BROOKLYN, NY – New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Senator Julia Salazar, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, and Councilmembers Jennifer Gutiérrez and Lincoln Restler sent a letter to the Public Service Commission (PSC) demanding the rejection of Consolidated Edison’s (ConEd) proposed rate hikes. The proposal would increase electricity rates by 11.4% and gas rates by 13.3% for New York City and Westchester residents.

North Brooklyn elected officials, with concern for NYC’s affordability crisis and the need for more sustainable energy alternatives, are urging the PSC to consider putting working class New Yorkers and sustainability ahead of more revenue for ConEd.

ConEdison’s proposed rate increases would place an undue burden on families and small businesses already struggling with rising living costs. There has been no demonstration of sufficient need for such drastic hikes, which come on the heels of three other approved rate hikes between July 2023 and January 2025.

“NYC is in an affordability crisis and ConEd wants to take more from hard-working New Yorkers to line the pockets of their corporate shareholders,” said State Senator Kristen Gonzalez. “On top of that, any action on electricity and gas should go towards finding energy efficient solutions that help us achieve our CLCPA goals, and keep New York as a leader in sustainability. The PSC must reject these proposed rate hikes and work toward a solution that puts people first.”

“It is unthinkable that, while people are struggling to make their basic ends meet, ConEd is trying to push through a double-digit rate hike,” said Assemblymember Emily Gallagher. “It is our job to represent our constituents and fight this increase, which would be the fourth since the summer of 2023. New Yorkers need relief. They need us to lower their utility bills and transition away from fossil fuels to prevent the most dramatic effects of climate change. This rate hike is the wrong direction on all fronts. PSC must use its power to reject this proposal, stand up for New Yorkers, and ensure this continues to be a state where people can afford to live.
