Senator Pam Helming presented Jack Crabbe of Victor with the prestigious New York State Senate Liberty Medal, recognizing his bravery and quick thinking that saved his father's life during a cardiac emergency on the golf course

The Liberty Medal is awarded to individuals who have earned special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers. It is the highest civilian honor that can be bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate.

Jon Crabbe collapsed on the golf course due to cardiac arrest. Without hesitation, Jack called 911, providing the operator with crucial details about his father’s condition. Following the dispatcher's expert guidance, Jack promptly began administering CPR, an essential skill he learned during his physical education classes at Victor High School. His quick actions sustained Jon’s life for approximately three to four minutes until first responders arrived on the scene, equipped with an automated external defibrillator (AED) that successfully restarted Jon’s heart. He was then transported to UR Medical Center for further treatment.

Senator Helming said, “The first minutes of a cardiac arrest are the most pivotal. Jack administered CPR, a skill her learned as a freshman in school, and remembered to use the song, “Stayin’ Alive” to maintain the recommended rhythm for chest compressions per minute, incredible!  His extraordinary maturity and decisive actions exemplify true leadership, proving that he is not only a student-leader but also a hero. I hope Jack’s inspiring story motivates others to become CPR certified, empowering more individuals to act in emergencies. From the 9-1-1 dispatcher who guided Jack, to the team of first responders who arrived on the scene, please know our community is grateful for the lifesaving work you do every day.”

Jon and Tricia Crabbe who attended the presentation added, “We couldn’t be prouder of Jack, his quick thinking and CPR skills he learned in school saved his father’s life. That moment not only changed our family forever, but proved the power of education is about preparing for real moments that truly matter.”

Tim Terranova, Victor CSD Superintendent, said "We are incredibly proud of Jack and the lifesaving procedure he performed on his father. We are also thankful for the expertise of the Victor Central School physical education professionals and their foresight to teach CPR to our students. Because of this teaching, Jack was able to apply the skills he learned from class and help save his father. This also takes unbelievable grace under pressure by an amazing 16 year old who made a significant difference, not only in the lives of his family, but in our entire community that day."
