Statement from Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick: Another Year, Another Late Budget

Late Budget

For the fourth consecutive year under Governor Hochul, the state budget is late—yet again leaving New Yorkers, local governments, and school districts in a state of uncertainty. While we passed a temporary budget extender to keep basic operations running, this is merely a short-term Band-Aid that does nothing to provide the stability our communities need. Local governments and school districts are left in limbo, struggling to develop their own budgets without knowing what resources they can count on from the state. Budget negotiations should be transparent and focused on the needs of the people—not last-minute backroom deals that delay critical funding. New Yorkers deserve a budget that prioritizes fiscal responsibility, economic growth, and essential services without unnecessary delays. I will continue to fight for a commonsense budget that puts stability and responsible governance first. Our communities cannot afford this dysfunction year after year. It’s time to fix this process and deliver a budget that works for all New Yorkers.
