Statement on the Passing of Dr. Hazel Dukes

Today my heart is heavy with news of the passing of Dr. Hazel Dukes, President of the NAACP New York State Conference.

Dr. Dukes and her tireless advocacy touched and made a profound impact on countless lives.

I am pleased to have celebrated her contributions and legacy. I was the co-host, along with Robert Troiano, of a street renaming in her honor in Roslyn Heights, where she fought against housing discrimination and lived for many years. Dr. Dukes was a legendary civil rights leader and a fierce advocate for the dignity of all people.

My prayers are with her family, colleagues, and friends during this time. Sleep in peace, Ma Dukes. I am blessed that I had a role model in you.
